Be aware of how your thoughts make you feel. 

Sit with this when you are having a difficult time with controlling your thoughts. 

Keep moving into feeling. You will be pulled back constantly into your thoughts but persevere.  You will find this becomes easier and as your awareness of your thoughts increases so will your choice of thoughts. You will find they are clearer, healthier and more aligned to you feeling good.

And from there your life will follow suit.

The more you practice this, the better your brain receptors will reinforce these new neural pathways. 

Just like working out at the gym.
